The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 has begun arriving at dealerships, and Hyundai claims that the SE Long Range version of this electric sedan can achieve 361 miles on a single charge. To assess this claim, we conducted a real-world test under less-than-ideal conditions—50°F (10°C) and rainy weather—on Michigan’s I-94.

In order to reach the claimed 361 miles, we would need to average 4.7 miles per kWh (212.7 Wh/mile). During our test, we maintained an average speed close to the speed limit of 70 mph, though construction zones intermittently reduced our speed. After driving 40 miles, our average consumption was 4 miles per kWh (250 Wh/mile).

While we did not achieve Hyundai’s claimed range, several factors contributed to this result. The low temperature required some use of the heater, which impacts efficiency despite the presence of a heat pump. Additionally, driving at the speed limit rather than at a slower pace would likely improve overall efficiency.

With the Ioniq 6’s 77.4 kWh battery pack, our real-world range estimate stands at approximately 310 miles per full charge. This figure remains competitive, surpassing the real-world range of many other new EVs. For comparison, the Tesla Model 3’s entry-level model is EPA-rated for 272 miles, or 4 miles per kWh. The Lucid Air Pure rear-drive model, also known for efficiency, is rated at 4.2 miles per kWh, although we have not independently verified this yet and it starts at nearly $90,000.

Looking ahead, the upcoming Volkswagen ID.7 is projected to offer a range of 336 miles in the U.S., or 4.4 miles per kWh. While it remains to be seen if the Ioniq 6 will be the most efficient EV available, it is a strong contender in the electric sedan market. The Ioniq 6’s capability to recharge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes further enhances its appeal as a road trip vehicle, as verified with the Ioniq 5.
