Two paths to affordable EVs: Ford’s Ranchero pickup meets Toyota’s upgraded bZ

Ford’s upcoming Ranchero EV promises to shake up the market by delivering a true entry-level electric pickup at a price point few competitors can touch. Toyota, meanwhile, has updated its bZ crossover with more range, more power, and a cleaner design. Both target mainstream buyers, but they approach the challenge of affordable electrification from very different directions.

Price and positioning

Ford is aiming squarely at the value-conscious buyer. The Ranchero EV is expected to start at around $30,000 when it reaches showrooms in 2027. It’s part of Ford’s “Model T moment” strategy: build EVs at scale using a universal platform that cuts cost and complexity.

Toyota’s bZ crossover starts a bit higher, with the current model priced at about $37,000. But unlike Ford, Toyota’s vehicle is already on the road. The updated version, coming for the 2026 model year, won’t stray far from that figure while offering big improvements in performance and range.

Verdict: Ford wins on affordability—at least on paper. Toyota offers proven value today.

Design and features

The Ranchero EV hasn’t been shown yet, but expect a compact crew-cab truck designed to maximize passenger space and practicality. It will run Ford’s latest SYNC infotainment system, include over-the-air updates, and likely feature BlueCruise semi-autonomous driving technology. Its design ethos is functional and straightforward.

Toyota’s bZ, on the other hand, has already had its makeover. The refreshed crossover ditches the awkward black body cladding in favor of cleaner body-colored panels. The cabin is anchored by a 14-inch touchscreen and upgraded materials that help elevate the driving experience. It’s a more polished product with attention to both form and function.

Verdict: Toyota takes this round with a finished, refined package.

Powertrain and performance

Ford hasn’t released official numbers for the Ranchero EV, but the company has hinted at using lithium iron phosphate battery packs and delivering performance on par with a Mustang EcoBoost. That suggests brisk acceleration for a budget EV, but nothing close to high-performance territory.

Toyota’s upgrades are much more concrete. The all-wheel-drive version of the bZ now produces 338 horsepower, dropping its 0–60 mph time to under five seconds. That’s a massive leap from the outgoing version and enough to make it competitive with sporty electric crossovers from Hyundai and Kia.

Verdict: Toyota wins decisively, with specs Ford has yet to match.

Range and charging

Ford is expected to target practical range numbers in the 200–250 mile range, a sweet spot for cost and usability. Charging will rely on a 400-volt architecture that keeps costs low but may limit outright charging speed compared to pricier rivals.

Toyota has already improved its offering. The front-wheel-drive bZ Plus can now achieve up to 314 miles of range, a 25 percent boost over before. It also adds NACS charging compatibility and Plug & Charge, with a 10–80 percent fast-charge session taking around 30 minutes.

Verdict: Toyota again, with hard numbers Ford can’t yet deliver.

Availability and production

The Ranchero EV will be built at Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant, with production beginning in 2026 and deliveries starting in 2027. It’s still very much a future promise.

Toyota’s bZ is already available in its current form, with the facelifted version arriving for the 2026 model year. Buyers can walk into a dealership today and drive away in one, something Ford can’t offer yet.

Verdict: Toyota wins for being here now.

Final thoughts

The Ford Ranchero EV and Toyota bZ couldn’t be more different, but together they illustrate the expanding spectrum of affordable EVs. The Ranchero EV is all about democratizing the electric pickup, bringing truck utility to buyers who don’t want to spend more than thirty grand. The Toyota bZ is about refinement and accessibility in crossover form, delivering strong range, respectable performance, and Toyota reliability at a still-reasonable price.

If you’re willing to wait for Ford’s budget pickup revolution, the Ranchero EV promises to be one of the cheapest ways into an EV truck. But if you want a polished, capable electric vehicle right now, the Toyota bZ is the clear choice.
