2026 Corvette ZR1X adds front electric motor to twin-turbo V8

Chevrolet has announced the 2026 Corvette ZR1X, a new model that incorporates all-wheel drive and a combined output of 1,250 horsepower. The ZR1X builds upon the foundation of the Corvette ZR1 and E-Ray models and includes both a twin-turbocharged V8 engine and a front-axle electric motor. According to General Motors, this configuration makes the ZR1X the most powerful and technologically advanced Corvette to date.

The internal combustion component of the ZR1X powertrain is designated the LT7 engine. It is a 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that produces 1,064 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 828 lb-ft of torque at 6,000 rpm. Key design elements include a flat-plane crankshaft, finger-follower valvetrain, and dry-sump lubrication. The engine also uses two 76-mm turbochargers positioned close to the exhaust valves to reduce turbo lag, along with anti-lag control software to maintain turbocharger speed in specific conditions.

The front axle of the ZR1X is driven by a compact electric motor that delivers 186 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. This motor is paired with a 1.9-kWh lithium-ion battery pack mounted within the car’s central spine. Although the battery capacity is similar to that in the E-Ray, GM states that energy deployment has been increased for better track performance. The battery charges through regenerative braking and does not require external charging. The front drive unit is capable of applying power up to speeds of 160 mph before disengaging.

Chevrolet estimates that the ZR1X can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under two seconds and complete the quarter mile in under nine seconds, with a trap speed exceeding 150 mph. Power from the V8 engine is delivered to the rear wheels through an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. There is no mechanical connection between the gasoline and electric drivetrains.

The ZR1X uses an updated version of the eAWD chassis control system first developed for the E-Ray. This system continuously monitors vehicle conditions and driver inputs to manage power distribution between the front and rear axles. Multiple energy strategies are available, including settings tailored for endurance, qualifying laps, and short bursts of additional power.

The 2026 model year also introduces PTM Pro (Performance Traction Management), which includes several retained features even when traction and stability controls are disabled. These include regenerative brake torque vectoring, front axle brake pre-control for cornering, and customizable launch control settings.

Braking components on the ZR1X include carbon ceramic rotors measuring 16.5 inches in diameter at both ends. These are paired with Alcon 10-piston front and 6-piston rear calipers. According to Chevrolet, this configuration offers high thermal resistance and was tested to deliver deceleration forces up to 1.9G under specific conditions.

Two suspension setups are available. The standard configuration includes Michelin PS4S tires and is intended to balance comfort and performance. The optional ZTK Performance Package adds higher spring rates and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires. Vehicles with this package also include the Carbon Aero package as standard. The aero package adds various aerodynamic elements designed to generate 1,200 lbs of downforce at top speed.

The ZR1X will be available as either a coupe or hardtop convertible. It will feature the updated 2026 Corvette interior, including a three-screen layout, revised console, and a built-in Performance App that provides real-time vehicle data.

All ZR1X models will be manufactured at General Motors’ Bowling Green Assembly Plant in Kentucky. The LT7 engines will be hand-assembled at the nearby Bowling Green Performance Build Center. Pricing and availability information will be announced closer to the start of production.
