Toyota has announced updates for its electric SUV, which will be renamed the Toyota bZ for the 2026 model year. Previously known as the bZ4X, the vehicle will offer improvements in battery capacity, range, power output, charging capability, and overall design. The model is expected to arrive at dealerships in the second half of 2025.
The 2026 Toyota bZ will be offered with two lithium-ion battery options. A new 74.7-kWh battery is standard on the XLE FWD Plus, XLE AWD, and Limited (FWD and AWD) grades. Toyota estimates that vehicles equipped with this battery will offer a driving range of up to 314 miles on a full charge in the XLE FWD Plus model. Other estimated ranges include 299 miles for the Limited FWD, 288 miles for the XLE AWD, and 278 miles for the Limited AWD. A smaller 57.7-kWh battery will be available on a base XLE FWD model, with an estimated range of 236 miles.
Charging technology has been updated with the addition of a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port. Under ideal conditions, DC fast charging can restore the battery from 10% to 80% capacity in about 30 minutes. The vehicle also supports Level 1 and Level 2 AC charging, with an upgraded 11-kW onboard charger. A battery pre-conditioning system is now included on all models to help optimize charging times, particularly in cold climates.
Toyota has upgraded the eAxle units on the 2026 bZ with silicon carbide semiconductors. The result is an increase in system output. Front-wheel-drive models now produce up to 221 horsepower, while all-wheel-drive versions deliver 338 horsepower and can accelerate from 0-60 mph in approximately 4.9 seconds.
The vehicle receives modest exterior design updates, including changes to the front fascia, overfenders, and lighting elements. A sleeker profile and new color-matched exterior trim are included on select models. Interior updates include a redesigned dashboard, a standard 14-inch touchscreen with Toyota Audio Multimedia, dual wireless phone chargers, and 64-color ambient lighting. Seating and materials vary by trim, with the Limited grade offering heated and ventilated seats and additional driver-assist technologies.
The bZ continues to ride on Toyota’s e-TNGA platform, which contributes to a low center of gravity and rigid body structure. It offers 8.2 inches of ground clearance, an overall length of 184.6 inches, width of 73.2 inches, and height of 65 inches. Interior space includes 42.1 inches of front legroom, 35.3 inches of rear legroom, and 27.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row.
The vehicle will be offered in two main trims: XLE and Limited. The XLE is available with FWD, FWD Plus, or AWD configurations, while the Limited comes in FWD or AWD. Standard features include ambient lighting, heated front and rear seats, regenerative braking paddles, and a full suite of driver assistance technologies. AWD models include Toyota’s X-MODE system and Grip Control for enhanced traction on varied terrain.
Connectivity features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, voice control via Intelligent Assistant, and integrated streaming through Apple Music and Amazon Music. The vehicle also includes Wi-Fi connectivity for up to five devices, remote climate control, and digital key access through the Toyota App. Safety features include Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Safe Exit Alert. The Limited grade adds Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Change Assist, Front Cross Traffic Alert, and a 360-degree camera system.
Pricing will be announced closer to the vehicle’s on-sale date.
