Kia has revealed a refreshed version of its Niro hybrid crossover, updating the compact model with new styling, a modernized cabin, and a broader suite of driver-assistance systems. The 2027 Kia Niro continues to focus exclusively on hybrid power, and Kia says it will reach dealerships this summer. The refresh also arrives at a good moment. Across much of the U.S. market, hybrids are outselling pure electric vehicles, and that trend gives the gasoline-electric Niro a favorable backdrop for its mid-cycle update.
The Niro has held a distinct place in Kia’s lineup since it debuted as a 2017 model roughly a decade ago. It pairs hybrid efficiency with the higher seating and cargo space of a small crossover. For 2027, Kia says it has made what it describes as meaningful investments across the vehicle rather than a wholesale redesign. “Niro has established itself as an important part of Kia’s lineup and continues to resonate with customers,” said Orth Hedrick, executive director of Product Planning at Kia North America. “For the new model year, we’ve made meaningful investments across several areas of the vehicle to further enhance the ownership experience and ensure Niro remains a compelling choice for years to come.”
Kia says the 2027 Kia Niro is available exclusively as a hybrid, with the lineup expanding to include a new S trim positioned alongside the existing LX, EX, and SX grades. Pricing and additional specifications will be announced closer to the on-sale date. The Niro nameplate has previously included hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric versions. The value those earlier models hold over time still draws interest, as our look at how much a 2020 Kia Niro EV has depreciated after five years shows.
A sharper, more confident design
The exterior changes follow Kia’s “Opposites United” design language, which the company has rolled out across much of its recent lineup. At the front, a redesigned fascia incorporates Kia’s signature Star Map lighting elements and daytime running light graphics that emphasize both horizontal and vertical lines. Kia says the arrangement creates a wider visual stance and a stronger road presence, while revised bumper and grille treatments contribute to a cleaner overall appearance.
The updates continue at the rear, where a new liftgate carries redesigned three-dimensional taillamps and a smoother bumper for a more cohesive look. Wheel arch cladding reinforces the crossover’s rugged, practical character, while body-colored C-pillars and a flowing roofline give the profile a more modern shape. Kia is also adding two new exterior paint colors, Ivory Silver and Sunset Beige, to the palette.
A more connected and modern cabin
Inside, the 2027 Kia Niro adopts a new panoramic curved display. A 12.3-inch infotainment screen is standard, and buyers can pair it with an available 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, while a 4-inch digital cluster serves as the standard configuration. A new two-tone steering wheel and revised trim aim to give the cabin a more refined and spacious feel.
Connectivity receives a significant upgrade through Kia’s next-generation Connected Car Navigation Cockpit, known as ccNC. The system introduces Quick Controls and supports over-the-air updates, allowing the vehicle to receive certain software improvements without a dealer visit. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now standard across every trim. That addresses a common complaint about earlier models, which required a wired connection on some versions.
Kia is also expanding the Niro’s in-car entertainment options. Available Entertainment and Data Services provide access to streaming platforms including Disney+, Netflix, and YouTube on certain trims, with video playback restricted to when the vehicle is parked. Personalization options include display themes tied to several of Disney’s brands, which Kia plans to roll out throughout 2026. Themes for all 30 NBA teams are also offered through the Kia Connect Store. The available Kia AI Assistant responds to a “Hey, Kia” voice prompt and can adjust climate settings, audio, and other functions through natural voice commands.
Hybrid power with a focus on refinement
Mechanically, the 2027 Kia Niro carries over its established hybrid powertrain. A 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine works with an electric motor to produce a combined 139 horsepower, which reaches the wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. That setup sets the Niro apart from many hybrid rivals, which use continuously variable transmissions. It also gives the crossover a more conventional driving feel.
Rather than chasing higher output, Kia says its engineers concentrated on refinement for the new model year. The company points to revised suspension tuning, improved ride comfort, and reduced cabin noise as the primary mechanical goals of the update. Kia says the changes are intended to deliver a smoother and more composed experience without altering the responsive character that has defined the Niro. That focus on efficiency and daily usability fits a broader pattern at the automaker. Kia’s hybrid sales climbed 73 percent in the first quarter of 2026, even as demand for its dedicated electric models softened.
Expanded driver-assistance technology
The 2027 Niro adds meaningfully to its Advanced Driver Assistance Systems roster. The standard Forward Collision Avoidance system now includes Junction Turning, Cyclist, and Direct Oncoming detection, broadening the range of scenarios in which it can intervene. Blind-Spot Collision Warning, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance, and Smart Cruise Control 2 remain standard, as does Lane Following Assist 2, which helps keep the vehicle centered in its lane. Kia has enhanced that system with a Hands-on-Detection sensor that monitors whether the driver is engaging with the steering wheel.
Higher trims gain additional capability. The SX Touring adds a 360-degree Surround View Monitor and a Blind-Spot View Monitor, the latter of which displays a live video feed of the adjacent lane in the instrument cluster when the driver activates a turn signal. Also newly available is Highway Drive Assist 2, which can maintain a set speed and following distance while assisting with lane-centering during highway driving. These systems place the Niro closer to the technology found in Kia’s larger and more expensive models.
A hybrid-focused strategy
By keeping the Niro focused on hybrid power, Kia is doubling down on a strategy that has served it well. Buyers continue to weigh the cost-and-convenience trade-offs among gasoline, hybrid, and fully electric vehicles. The approach mirrors moves elsewhere in the lineup, including the 2027 Kia Seltos, which gains a hybrid powertrain and the brand’s first electrified all-wheel-drive system on a hybrid SUV. Together, the updated Niro and the newly electrified Seltos give Kia two distinct hybrid crossovers at the more affordable end of its range.
Kia has not yet released pricing for the 2027 Kia Niro, but the expansion to four trims gives shoppers more ways to configure the crossover as it gains content. With refreshed styling, a more modern cabin, and a deeper set of safety and convenience features, the Niro enters its next model year positioned to remain one of the more affordable paths into a hybrid crossover. Kia says the 2027 Niro will go on sale this summer, with full pricing and trim details to follow.
