BMW has announced efficiency improvements for the i5 lineup, resulting in increased EPA-estimated range for both the i5 eDrive40 and i5 xDrive40 models starting with March 2025 production. These enhancements stem from the integration of silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductor components in the power electronics and upgraded wheel bearings.
Updated range estimates
- i5 eDrive40
- 310 miles with 19-inch wheels (+5%)
- 300 miles with 20-inch wheels (+8%)
- 278 miles with 21-inch wheels (+3%)
- i5 xDrive40
- 278 miles with 19-inch wheels (+5%)
- 272 miles with 20-inch wheels (+4%)
- 259 miles with 21-inch wheels (+4%)
The use of SiC inverters enhances the efficiency of energy transfer from the high-voltage battery to the electric motor. Compared to traditional silicon-based semiconductors, SiC offers improved efficiency, power delivery, and thermal resistance.
These updates apply to vehicles produced from March 2025 onward.
