Chinese automaker BYD is planning to enter Japan’s kei car segment with a fully electric vehicle tailored specifically for the local market, according to multiple reports and company insiders. The move marks a strategic first for BYD, which has previously exported China-designed models to international markets but has not developed a vehicle exclusively for a foreign country.
The company is targeting a 2026 release and expects the new model to be priced around 2.5 million yen, aligning with existing electric kei car offerings in Japan. The vehicle will be manufactured in China and exported to Japan, but it is being designed to comply with Japan’s unique kei car regulations, which govern size, engine capacity, and other vehicle characteristics.
Kei cars, also known as kei-jidosha or light vehicles, account for approximately 40% of the Japanese auto market and are largely dominated by domestic manufacturers such as Suzuki, Daihatsu, and Honda. The segment has been notoriously difficult for foreign automakers to penetrate due to Japan’s strict regulatory framework and customer expectations specific to the category.
In a notable departure from its usual practices, BYD will equip the vehicle with a CHAdeMO charging connector, which remains a standard for electric vehicles in Japan. This decision highlights BYD’s intention to integrate more seamlessly with Japan’s existing EV infrastructure, as the CHAdeMO protocol is distinct from the charging systems commonly used in China and other markets.
The kei EV is reported to have already completed its design phase. Once released, it would significantly expand BYD’s presence in Japan, where the company has so far focused on larger passenger EVs and buses.
BYD’s Japan-specific strategy could set a precedent for other foreign automakers seeking access to one of the most challenging but potentially rewarding automotive markets in the world.
