Mercedes-Benz has provided Pope Francis with the first electric Popemobile, a custom vehicle based on the new electric G-Class. This handcrafted model was created to meet the Vatican’s strict specifications and aligns with the Pope’s emphasis on sustainability as outlined in his encyclical “Laudato Si.” The vehicle was delivered in preparation for the 2025 Jubilee, an event expected to attract millions to Rome.
The new Popemobile incorporates Mercedes-Benz EQ technology, using a fully electric drivetrain tailored for the slow speeds required during public appearances. The design includes a height-adjustable and swiveling central seat to accommodate the Pope’s needs and provide flexibility in addressing audiences. The vehicle also features two additional seats for passengers and a custom hardtop for protection during adverse weather conditions.
The Popemobile continues a 94-year relationship between Mercedes-Benz and the Vatican. The company has supplied vehicles to the Vatican since 1930, with the G-Class serving as the basis for Popemobiles since the 1980s. Earlier models have included features such as extended wheelbases and landaulet designs. Some of these vehicles are now displayed in the Vatican and the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart.
Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius, along with team members involved in the project, presented the vehicle to Pope Francis during a private ceremony at the Vatican. Representatives from various departments, including design, research, manufacturing, and sales, participated in the development of the vehicle, which took approximately one year to complete.
The collaboration underscores Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to electromobility and its ambition to achieve a net-carbon-neutral vehicle fleet by 2039. The Popemobile, painted in pearl white, reflects the company’s blend of tradition and innovation.
