DHL completes autonomous vehicle trial at Heathrow Airport

DHL Supply Chain has completed a trial of an autonomous vehicle operating in live airport traffic at Heathrow Airport. Over a 14-day period, the vehicle covered 1,300 kilometers autonomously, marking a milestone in DHL’s partnership with Heathrow for airside operations and logistics.

This initiative is part of DHL’s ongoing efforts to enhance airport logistics through innovation and sustainability. Since 2020, DHL has provided baggage logistics and support services at Heathrow. The deployment aims to evaluate how autonomous vehicle technology can increase efficiency in inter-terminal baggage transfers and serve as a foundation for automating other airport operations.

The trial involved a passenger vehicle equipped with self-driving software developed by Oxa. Prior to deployment, the vehicle underwent a series of safety and integration exercises. On its first operational day, it functioned autonomously without requiring modifications to the airside environment. Over the trial period, the vehicle’s performance was optimized, meeting all safety and operational benchmarks.

DHL currently manages the transfer of over 60,000 passenger bags each month between Heathrow terminals. This trial is seen as a step toward scaling the use of autonomous vehicles for these operations, with future plans to deploy electric vans and tow tractors specifically designed for baggage handling.

DHL collaborated with Heathrow and Oxa for the project. Heathrow officials emphasized the importance of innovation in meeting the demands of modern airport operations, highlighting the role autonomous technology can play in enhancing efficiency and sustainability. DHL representatives noted that partnerships with technology providers like Oxa allow for the development of competitive solutions tailored to their customers’ needs.

The project demonstrates the potential of autonomous vehicles to address logistical challenges in the aviation sector, with a focus on creating scalable and sustainable solutions.
