General Motors (GM) has announced plans to temporarily lay off approximately 200 employees at its Factory Zero assembly plant in Detroit-Hamtramck, effective April 14, 2025. The company stated that this decision aims to adjust production schedules to better align with current market dynamics and is not related to recently imposed auto tariffs.
Factory Zero, GM’s first fully dedicated all-electric vehicle assembly plant, produces several of the company’s flagship electric models, including the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Hummer EV SUV and pickup, and the all-electric Cadillac Escalade IQ. The facility employs approximately 4,500 workers.
A person familiar with production plans indicated that the majority of the layoffs will occur in the battery pack manufacturing area, with no current plans for those positions to return. Impacted employees will be placed on temporary layoff and may be eligible for supplemental pay and benefits in accordance with the GM-UAW national contract.
This development comes amid a broader context of adjustments within the automotive industry. For instance, in October 2023, GM delayed the production of electric pickup trucks at its Orion Township, Michigan, factory to late 2025, citing slowing U.S. demand for electric vehicles and the need to better manage capital investments.
