Honda Motor Co. Ltd. recently held its “Honda 0 Tech Meeting 2024” in Tokyo, where it introduced several new technologies that will be incorporated into the upcoming Honda 0 Series. This new electric vehicle (EV) line is set to launch globally in 2026, with Honda adopting a development strategy they call “Thin, Light, and Wise.” This strategy aims to create efficient, well-designed vehicles with a focus on technology and driving experience.
At the event, Honda highlighted five core values for its 0 Series: artistic design, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), Internet of Things (IoT) integration for connected experiences, driving enjoyment, and efficient energy use. The company unveiled two concept models, the Saloon and the Space-Hub, at CES 2024 in Las Vegas, with plans to produce a flagship model of the Saloon for release in 2026. Seven models in total are expected to be launched globally by 2030.
Honda also plans to unveil another 0 Series model at CES 2025. This model will demonstrate the company’s newest technologies and design approaches.
Key technologies
Honda’s “Thin” approach focuses on maintaining the company’s Man Maximum, Machine Minimum (M/M) design philosophy. Vehicles will be designed with low height, short overhangs, and an overall compact appearance, ensuring comfort and efficient use of space.
The “Light” approach prioritizes sporty driving and top-tier energy efficiency. A newly developed EV platform using ultra-high strength steel (2.0 GPa grade hot stamping) enables thin, low-height vehicle designs while maintaining safety. This platform incorporates a compact e-Axle, which houses the motor and inverter in a more efficient horizontal layout, and a thin battery pack, which increases space and range.
Honda also introduced an active aerodynamic system, which reduces drag and improves vehicle stability. This system will automatically adjust the front aero deflector based on vehicle speed. The company has worked on body rigidity to enhance vehicle stability and reduce weight by approximately 100 kg (220 pounds) compared to previous Honda EVs.
Honda’s “Wise” approach focuses on software-defined vehicles (SDVs), leveraging intelligent systems and over-the-air (OTA) updates to improve vehicles after purchase. Honda is aiming to provide continuous software upgrades, enhancing the ADAS and connected systems over time.
The Honda 0 Series will also feature advanced energy management and digital user experiences, including a highly efficient power unit capable of an EPA-rated range of around 300 miles. Energy-saving features will also be implemented for cold weather conditions, utilizing technologies such as heat pumps and radiant heating.
