Honda has provided an update on its ongoing efforts to establish the Honda EV Hub in Ohio, with a focus on creating flexibility in its vehicle production processes. This initiative will enable Honda to manufacture both petrol hybrid-electric and battery electric vehicles (EVs) on the same production lines. The first EV to be produced at the facility, based on the Acura Performance EV Concept, is expected to roll off the line at the Marysville Auto Plant in late 2025.
The retooling efforts encompass three major production facilities: the Marysville Auto Plant, the East Liberty Auto Plant, and the Anna Engine Plant. The goal of these changes is to implement more human-friendly and environmentally responsible processes, while maintaining a high level of quality and efficiency. This transformation will allow Honda to create a flexible production environment that supports both current internal combustion engine (ICE) and hybrid models, while preparing for future EV production.
A significant milestone in this transition is the installation of six 6000-ton high-pressure die-cast machines at the Anna Engine Plant. These machines will be used for megacasting, a new capability for Honda, allowing the production of much larger components such as the cases for the Intelligent Power Unit (IPU), which houses the EV battery and forms part of the vehicle’s platform.
Honda’s EV Hub in Ohio is designed to act as a foundation for the company’s EV production across North America and globally. The hub will facilitate the assembly of the IPU, which combines battery modules sourced from the Honda-LG Energy Solution joint venture with the IPU cases made at the Anna Engine Plant. These units will be used in a variety of Honda’s mid- and large-size EVs produced in Ohio.
This transformation of production lines aims to simplify manufacturing processes, streamline logistics, and reduce the physical strain on workers. By reducing the complexity of the production lines and optimizing the flow of materials, Honda hopes to create an environment that allows associates to work more efficiently.
The Honda EV Hub in Ohio was first announced in October 2022, alongside an investment of $700 million to retool the company’s production facilities. In addition, Honda and LG Energy Solution have committed $3.5 billion to a joint battery plant, with a projected total investment of $4.4 billion. This facility, which is expected to be operational by the end of 2024, will have an annual capacity of around 40GWh.
The Acura Performance EV Concept, which debuted at Monterey Car Week in 2024, marks a significant step in Honda’s electrification strategy. The all-electric Acura model based on this concept will be the first vehicle produced at the Marysville Auto Plant in late 2025. Honda’s long-term goal is for battery-electric and fuel-cell electric vehicles to make up 100% of its global sales by 2040.
Since beginning U.S. automobile production in 1982, Honda has expanded its manufacturing presence significantly, now operating 12 plants and employing over 23,000 associates in the U.S. The company’s cumulative auto production in the U.S. has surpassed 30 million vehicles.
