Hyundai Motor Company has presented a new hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) concept, Initium, at an event in Seoul. The concept represents Hyundai’s focus on hydrogen technology as part of its long-term sustainability efforts. Named after the Latin word for “beginning,” Initium previews an upcoming production FCEV expected in early 2025. Hyundai’s initiative aligns with its commitment to promoting a hydrogen-based energy future, reflected in the company’s HTWO hydrogen brand introduced at CES 2024.
Initium highlights Hyundai’s new “Art of Steel” design language, combining a robust and functional SUV aesthetic with elements symbolizing hydrogen power, such as a distinctive lighting design. A central feature is the SUV’s targeted range of over 650 kilometers per refuel, achieved through optimized fuel cell technology, including improved motor output up to 150 kW. Hyundai has integrated a route planner to address the limited hydrogen refueling infrastructure, allowing users to identify and assess refueling station availability directly from the vehicle.
The interior design prioritizes space, with enhanced comfort features for rear passengers and ample cargo capacity, suited to family use. The SUV can also supply electricity for devices through Hyundai’s Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) feature, positioning the vehicle as a mobile power source for various applications. Hyundai has prioritized safety in the Initium concept with reinforced body structures and nine airbags to enhance crash protection.
Initium will be exhibited at upcoming events, including the Los Angeles Auto Show and Auto Guangzhou in November. Hyundai has underscored its role in hydrogen mobility by highlighting its 27-year history in the field, marked by milestones such as the mass production of FCEVs in 2018. This ongoing development is part of Hyundai’s broader “Progress for Humanity” brand vision, emphasizing zero-emission solutions across various applications.
