Hyundai Motor Company announced that its MobED robotic mobility platform has been recognized with the Best of Innovation Award in the Robotics category at CES 2026. MobED, short for Mobile Eccentric Droid, was developed by Hyundai Motor Group’s Robotics LAB as a modular, low-profile mobility platform capable of navigating both indoor and outdoor environments. The company describes MobED as a solution designed to support various industries through customizable configurations, autonomous operation capabilities, and integration with artificial intelligence systems. Commercial production is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2026, with MobED set to be demonstrated publicly during CES 2026 as part of Hyundai Motor Group’s exhibit.

According to Hyundai, the CES recognition highlights ongoing investments in robotics as part of the company’s broader strategy to expand beyond traditional automotive manufacturing. MobED was first unveiled in concept form in 2022 before appearing again at the International Robot Exhibition (iREX) in Tokyo in December 2025. The updated model incorporates Hyundai’s proprietary Drive and Lift (DnL) technology, a system designed to stabilize the platform across uneven surfaces. The DnL system individually adjusts wheel positioning and height, allowing MobED to maintain a level posture even when traveling over curbs, inclines, or rough environments. This capability is central to the vehicle’s intended use in settings that may not be suitable for conventional wheeled carts or transport devices.

Hyundai plans to offer MobED in two distinct configurations: MobED Basic and MobED Pro. The Basic version is designed primarily for controller-based operation, making it suitable for development environments, research facilities, or applications that require manual oversight. The Pro model includes greater autonomy through onboard sensors and navigation software. It integrates LiDAR and camera-based fusion systems to map surroundings, avoid obstacles, and plot travel paths without continuous operator control. Hyundai indicates that both versions share a modular platform structure, allowing external components, tools, and devices to be mounted to the top surface depending on the application.
The design approach focuses on simplicity, with a restrained appearance and emphasis on core functionality rather than aesthetic features. Hyundai notes that MobED was intentionally built as a platform rather than a single-purpose robot. This allows industries to adapt it for logistics, delivery tasks, broadcasting equipment transport, digital signage support, guidance systems in public spaces, and other potential uses. Because the top portion can be replaced or customized, the same base unit can theoretically serve different roles over its lifespan, depending on operational needs.

Autonomous operation is supported by artificial intelligence-based algorithms that process environmental data in real time. Hyundai states that MobED is capable of traveling through narrow indoor passageways while also functioning outdoors on rugged surfaces. Safety systems rely on sensor feedback to help reduce unintended collisions and improve user control. While the company emphasizes potential versatility, it stops short of predicting specific commercial adoption scenarios, instead positioning MobED as a platform designed to enable varied customer-driven development.
Dong Jin Hyun, Vice President and Head of Hyundai Motor Group’s Robotics LAB, described the award as validation of the company’s efforts to advance robotics technologies. He referenced MobED’s progression from an early conceptual prototype into what Hyundai now considers a production-ready platform. From Hyundai’s perspective, robotics systems like MobED will eventually integrate into broader smart mobility networks that the company is developing, which also include autonomous vehicles, air mobility initiatives, and connected infrastructure.
Mass production of MobED is planned to begin in early 2026, with availability and purchasing details expected to be released through the Robotics LAB website. Demonstrations scheduled for CES 2026 will allow attendees to observe MobED performing logistics and delivery-style operations as well as autonomous navigation displays. Hyundai has not provided pricing information or deployment timelines beyond its manufacturing target. The company also has not disclosed which industries or partners may be among the first to adopt the technology.
