Elon Musk is expected to step back from his current central role within the Trump administration in the coming weeks, according to three individuals familiar with the matter, as reported by Politico. The move has been discussed within President Donald Trump’s inner circle and was confirmed by senior administration officials.
Musk currently holds the designation of “special government employee,” a temporary classification that exempts him from certain ethics and conflict-of-interest regulations. That designation is set to expire in late May or early June. According to sources, Musk will transition out of his formal role around that time, though he may continue in an informal advisory capacity.
The change in Musk’s status follows growing concerns within the administration and among political allies regarding his unpredictability and communication style. His public comments and decisions — often shared on his social media platform, X — have, at times, conflicted with official White House messaging and caused confusion within federal agencies. Officials have pointed to challenges in coordinating Musk’s actions with the chain of command overseen by Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
While Musk has played a prominent role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative, which aims to reduce government spending and streamline operations, some officials believe his impact has reached a natural conclusion. Others have cited concerns that further cuts could affect essential programs.
Musk’s political influence has also drawn attention. His involvement in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race, where he reportedly invested around $20 million to support a conservative candidate, was highlighted by opponents after the candidate lost by ten points. The result intensified scrutiny of Musk’s role and raised questions about his long-term utility as a public figure within the administration.
President Trump acknowledged Musk’s potential departure during a March 24 Cabinet meeting, which Musk attended. Trump praised Musk’s contributions and referred to him as a “patriot” and “a friend.” Cabinet secretaries also voiced support for Musk’s efforts, despite earlier disagreements over his management style.
In an interview, Musk indicated that he believed the administration would have achieved much of its fiscal goals by the time his temporary employment status ends, including a targeted $1 trillion deficit reduction.
White House spokesperson Harrison Fields stated that Musk would remain involved until further notice, noting his ongoing contributions to the administration’s agenda. However, other officials suggested the administration is prepared for Musk to shift into a less visible role.
Internal relief has reportedly grown among some Trump aides and allies who hope Musk’s transition will reduce disruptions caused by abrupt policy proposals and controversial public statements.
