Kia America has announced plans to provide North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapters for its electric vehicles, including the EV6 and EV9 models. Starting from early 2025, the company will offer these adapters to expand charging options for its customers.
Kia customers who purchase a new 2024 or 2025 EV9 or a 2024 EV6 on or after September 4, 2024, will receive the NACS adapter at no additional cost. This adapter will allow access to over 16,500 NACS DC fast chargers in the United States. The distribution of these free adapters to eligible customers is expected to begin in early 2025.
Kia customers who acquired an EV6, EV9, or Niro EV before September 4, 2024, will have the option to purchase an adapter through an authorized Kia dealer at a later date. Access to the NACS DC fast chargers is planned to be available starting January 15, 2025.
Three types of NACS adapters will be offered:
- NACS to CCS1: This adapter enables existing Kia EVs to connect to DC fast chargers.
- CCS1 to NACS: This adapter allows NACS-equipped Kia EVs to use existing CCS DC chargers.
- J1772 to NACS: This adapter provides the ability for NACS-equipped Kia EVs to use AC Level 2 chargers.
In addition to the adapters, Kia will introduce features to enhance charging convenience. Beginning in early 2025, Kia EV owners will be able to access and pay for charging through the Kia Access app, following a required vehicle software upgrade. This feature will allow users to locate and navigate to charging stations through their EV infotainment system or compatible smartphone, with access to information such as charger availability, status, and pricing.
