Land Rover has announced the introduction of a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) variant for its iconic Defender model in the European market. This new addition to the Defender lineup reflects Land Rover’s commitment to offering more environmentally friendly options while maintaining the vehicle’s renowned off-road capabilities.
The PHEV version of the Defender, officially named the Defender P400e, combines a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 398 horsepower. The hybrid system allows the Defender to operate in full electric mode for short distances, providing zero-emission driving in urban environments. The electric-only range is approximately 27 miles (43 kilometers), making it suitable for city commutes and reducing the vehicle’s overall carbon footprint.
In addition to its environmental benefits, the hybrid powertrain also enhances the Defender’s performance. The instant torque provided by the electric motor improves acceleration and responsiveness, particularly in challenging off-road conditions where precise power delivery is crucial. Despite the addition of hybrid technology, the Defender P400e retains its full range of off-road features, including all-wheel drive, advanced terrain response systems, and a high ground clearance.
The introduction of the PHEV variant is part of Land Rover’s broader strategy to electrify its model lineup. As regulations in Europe become increasingly stringent regarding vehicle emissions, automakers like Land Rover are expanding their hybrid and electric offerings to meet these new standards while continuing to offer the performance and capability that customers expect.
The Defender P400e is available in both the 110 and 90 body styles, providing consumers with the option to choose between a more spacious or more compact version of the vehicle. Land Rover expects the PHEV model to appeal to a wide range of customers, from those looking for a more sustainable option to those who need a capable vehicle for both urban and off-road driving.
As the Land Rover Defender P400e enters the European market, it marks a significant step in the evolution of this legendary model, blending traditional ruggedness with modern hybrid technology.
