Mercedes-Benz to launch bidirectional charging technology in 2026

Mercedes-Benz announced plans to introduce bidirectional charging technology across its electric vehicle lineup beginning in 2026. The company revealed the initiative at IAA Mobility 2025 and confirmed that the new all-electric GLC will be the first model to feature the capability, followed by additional models such as the upcoming CLA series. The rollout will begin in Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, with other markets added gradually.

The system, known as MB.Charge Home, integrates the vehicle, a bidirectional wallbox, green energy tariffs, and access to the energy market. The Mobility House will provide the wallbox and energy market connection through a dedicated renewable energy tariff. The service aims to allow customers to optimize charging schedules and reduce household energy costs while supporting grid stability.

MB.Charge Home will be offered in two versions. The standard Intelligent package enables automated, cost-optimized charging based on electricity prices, renewable energy availability, and scheduled departure times. Charging typically occurs during off-peak hours or when renewable energy supply is high. The Pro Intelligent version adds bidirectional capability, allowing energy stored in the vehicle’s battery to be supplied back to the home or the grid during periods of high demand or elevated electricity prices.

Control of the system is managed through a smartphone app, which automates charging and energy transfers. The setup is designed to allow customers to use their vehicles as part of an existing home backup power system when paired with a compatible bidirectional wallbox.

Mercedes-Benz stated that this technology will make its electric vehicles part of a decentralized energy network. Vehicles will function as mobile energy storage units, charging when renewable energy generation is high and supplying electricity back to the grid when demand rises. This could help balance fluctuations in energy supply and demand while improving the integration of wind and solar power into the overall energy system.

The company acknowledged that regulatory frameworks in some countries will need to be updated to enable full vehicle-to-grid functionality. Mercedes-Benz is working with energy industry partners to address these requirements as the rollout expands.
