Mini has unveiled the Mini Pacesetter, an electrified version of the John Cooper Works GP, which will take on the role of the official safety car for the 2021 FIA Formula E World Championship series. This unique vehicle represents a fusion of Mini’s racing heritage and its commitment to electrification, offering a glimpse into the future of high-performance electric cars.

A New Role for the JCW GP

The Mini Pacesetter is based on the John Cooper Works GP, a model already renowned for its dynamic performance and racing pedigree. However, the Pacesetter takes this legacy a step further by incorporating a fully electric powertrain, making it the first electrified John Cooper Works vehicle to take to the track.

The Pacesetter is designed specifically for its role as a safety car in the Formula E series, where it will lead the grid during caution periods and ensure the safe running of the races. This marks a significant milestone for Mini, as it showcases the brand’s ability to combine electrification with the high-performance standards expected of a John Cooper Works model.

Performance and Specifications

Under the hood, the Mini Pacesetter is powered by an electric motor delivering 135 kW (equivalent to 181 horsepower) and 280 Nm (206 lb-ft) of torque. This setup allows the Pacesetter to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 6.7 seconds. While these numbers may not be as aggressive as some of the latest electric sports cars, they are more than adequate for the safety car duties in the Formula E championship.

The vehicle has been extensively modified to meet the demands of the racetrack. It features a specially developed suspension system, lightweight racing components, and aerodynamic enhancements, all designed to optimize performance and handling. The Pacesetter’s weight has been reduced to just 1,230 kg (2,712 lbs), contributing to its agility and responsiveness on the track.

Design and Aerodynamics

Visually, the Mini Pacesetter retains the distinctive look of the JCW GP but with several enhancements that highlight its role as a safety car. The exterior features a striking combination of colors, with the primary bodywork finished in matte silver, accented by bright orange and high-gloss black details. The bold graphics and safety car livery are designed to make the Pacesetter instantly recognizable on the track.

Aerodynamic modifications include a prominent front splitter, side skirts, and a large rear wing, all of which contribute to the car’s stability at high speeds. The Pacesetter also rides on 18-inch lightweight wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport tires, further enhancing its performance credentials.

A Commitment to Electrification

The introduction of the Mini Pacesetter as the safety car for the Formula E series underscores Mini’s commitment to electrification. As the automotive industry continues to shift towards electric mobility, Mini is demonstrating that it can bring the same level of excitement and performance to its electric models as it does to its traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.

The Pacesetter serves as both a functional safety car and a showcase for Mini’s future in electrified performance vehicles. It also aligns with the broader goals of the Formula E championship, which promotes sustainable racing and the development of electric vehicle technology.

Conclusion

The Mini Pacesetter represents a bold step for the brand, combining the racing spirit of the John Cooper Works lineup with the innovative potential of electric power. As it takes on its new role as the official safety car of the Formula E World Championship, the Pacesetter will not only ensure the safety of the drivers on the track but also signal Mini’s readiness to embrace the electrified future of motorsport.
