Mitsubishi announced today that the 2027 Eclipse Sportback will come with a NACS charge port as standard equipment on every model, giving the brand’s new electric subcompact SUV native access to the Tesla Supercharger network. A separate SAE J1772 plug will handle Level 1 and Level 2 charging at home and at slower public stations. The all-new battery electric vehicle launches across North America in the fall of 2026.
The charging details fill in one of the bigger blanks for shoppers who have been waiting on the Eclipse Sportback since its global debut in June. The vehicle is Mitsubishi’s first battery electric model in the United States since the i-MiEV, and it arrives through the company’s Alliance partnership with Nissan. The Eclipse Sportback is built by Nissan and based on the next-generation Nissan Leaf, which shares its fundamental charging hardware.
Standard NACS and Supercharger access

Mitsubishi will fit the NACS port to every Eclipse Sportback rather than reserving it for upper trims. The vehicle can fast-charge at up to 150 kW on Level 3 equipment, and Mitsubishi says a charge from 10 to 80 percent takes approximately 35 minutes. The company notes that charging time and capacity vary with the power source, ambient temperature, battery temperature, battery condition and age, and the use of vehicle accessories while charging.
NACS began as Tesla’s proprietary connector and has since been standardized by SAE International as J3400, becoming the default charging interface for the North American market after nearly every automaker committed to it over the past three years. Many recent EVs from other brands reach Superchargers only through a factory-supplied adapter that sits between the cable and a CCS port, so factory-native NACS remains a meaningful distinction, particularly at this end of the market. For Eclipse Sportback drivers, a native port means plugging directly into a Supercharger with no adapter to buy, carry, or lose, and the Supercharger network remains the benchmark for fast-charging reliability in North America.
The numbers place the Eclipse Sportback in the middle of the current field rather than at the front of it. Vehicles built on 800-volt architectures, such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5, can complete the same 10 to 80 percent charge in under 20 minutes. A 35-minute session is nonetheless workable for road trips, and consistent thermal management often matters more to real-world charging times than a high peak figure the battery can only hold briefly.
A second port for home charging
The Eclipse Sportback pairs its NACS port with a J1772 connector for Level 1 and Level 2 charging. Level 1 refers to a standard 120-volt household outlet, which adds range slowly, typically a few miles for every hour of charging, and suits drivers with short daily mileage. Level 2 uses a 240-volt supply, the kind provided by home wallbox installations and most public non-fast-charging stations, and can typically replenish the battery overnight. Because J1772 is the connector that the large majority of existing home charging equipment uses, current EV owners moving into an Eclipse Sportback will not need new hardware or an adapter in the garage.
The two-port arrangement mirrors the next-generation Leaf, which also uses NACS for DC fast charging and J1772 for AC charging. It also means all DC fast charging happens through the NACS port, so drivers who want to use CCS stations will face the same adapter considerations that apply to the related Leaf.
A 75 kWh battery with liquid cooling
Every Eclipse Sportback will carry a 75 kWh lithium-ion battery pack as standard. Mitsubishi says the pack is liquid-cooled to support charging efficiency, range, and battery life. That detail carries weight in this lineage. Earlier generations of the Nissan Leaf used passively air-cooled batteries, a design that drew criticism for heat buildup during repeated fast charging, and the liquid-cooled pack in the new platform addresses one of the older car’s most persistent complaints.
Mitsubishi has not yet published range, power, or pricing figures for the Eclipse Sportback. The mechanically related Leaf launched at $31,485 with up to 303 miles of range from the same size battery, which gives a rough sense of the neighborhood the Mitsubishi will compete in. Official numbers should arrive closer to the fall launch.
Familiar bones, Mitsubishi styling
Mitsubishi is differentiating the Eclipse Sportback visually rather than mechanically. The company says the vehicle wears unique front and rear fascias that echo other models in its global lineup, distinct lighting signatures at both ends, its own alloy wheel designs, and Triple Diamond badging. The approach follows long-standing Alliance practice, in which shared platforms carry different brand identities for different audiences.
The next step in Momentum 2030
The Eclipse Sportback is part of Momentum 2030, the five-year business plan Mitsubishi’s North American arm has laid out for product and business transformation. The plan calls for one new or completely refreshed model each year through 2030, a lineup that nearly doubles from today’s four vehicles, and a powertrain mix spanning internal combustion, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery electric options. Electrification is one of the plan’s four pillars, alongside the expanded product line, a modernized retail sales model, and a strengthened relationship with the roughly 300 dealers who sell the brand in the United States.
Mitsubishi frames the new EV as a continuation of its electric history rather than a first attempt. The company brought the i-MiEV, one of the first mass-produced modern electric vehicles, to the United States in 2011, before the Tesla Model S reached its first customers, and its Outlander PHEV has been among the longer-running plug-in hybrid SUVs on the market. The Eclipse Sportback will be joined in early 2027 by an all-new rugged, off-road derivative of the Outlander SUV, giving the brand two fresh entries in showrooms within a matter of months.
Mitsubishi says more information about the Eclipse Sportback will be released in the near future. For now, the charging picture is the clearest part of the story, and it is a consumer-friendly one: native Supercharger access on every trim of an affordable electric SUV, a familiar home charging connector, and a liquid-cooled battery designed to hold up over years of use.
