Slate, a new American electric vehicle manufacturer, has announced a unique modular feature for its first model, the Slate Truck. The vehicle, which comes standard as a 2-seat electric pickup, can be converted into a 5-seat SUV using an optional accessory kit. This flat-pack SUV Kit includes a rear seat, roll cage, and additional airbags, allowing owners to expand the vehicle’s configuration based on their needs.
The conversion kit is designed for do-it-yourself installation, though professional installation services will also be available. This modular approach supports Slate’s overall strategy of accessible personalization, where customers can adapt the vehicle over time rather than purchasing a new model. The SUV conversion adds to the vehicle’s interior volume, increasing usable cargo and passenger space.
Slate emphasizes that all accessory options, including the SUV Kit, can be purchased individually or bundled, either at the time of vehicle order or afterward. The company is also offering vehicle wrapping options for added personalization. The core vehicle platform remains the same regardless of configuration, maintaining the same battery, drivetrain, and chassis specifications.
The SUV Kit is part of a broader approach by Slate to simplify production while allowing customization. The company intends to manufacture the Slate Truck in the U.S. and distribute it via a direct-to-consumer model. Vehicle reservations are now open for $50, and pricing for the base model is expected to fall below $20,000 after federal incentives.
