Moke International’s Electric Moke has achieved a milestone in the automotive industry by becoming the first low-volume electric vehicle to receive approval from the California Air Resources Board (CARB). This approval makes it the only EV from a low-volume manufacturer to be certified by CARB, a distinction that highlights its compliance with stringent environmental standards. The approval extends the Electric Moke’s availability across all 50 U.S. states.
Moke International, based in the United Kingdom, is also the first low-volume EV manufacturer in the U.S. to meet the requirements of three regulatory bodies: CARB, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This triple certification confirms the Electric Moke’s adherence to U.S. safety and sustainability regulations, supporting its entry into the broader American market.
The Electric Moke is an all-electric update to a heritage vehicle brand that blends classic design with contemporary technology. It has an average charging time of four hours and reaches a maximum speed of 50 miles per hour, suitable for leisure driving in scenic locations. The vehicle represents Moke International’s shift to an entirely electric lineup.
Nick English, Executive Chairman of Moke International, noted that the CARB approval represents a significant step for the company, emphasizing the brand’s commitment to safety, environmental standards, and heritage. He also indicated that 2024 has been a year of considerable progress, and further growth is anticipated in 2025.
Originally developed as a military utility vehicle, the Moke gained popularity in the 1960s as a leisure vehicle. It appeared in four James Bond films and was a favorite of celebrities, including The Beatles and Brigitte Bardot. Today, the Electric Moke can be found at luxury hotels and resorts and in private collections, and with its CARB approval, it is now accessible to U.S. consumers.
The Electric Moke is produced in the UK, with most components sourced from British and European suppliers, demonstrating Moke International’s commitment to quality British engineering. Interested U.S. customers can secure their reservation with a $990 deposit. Deliveries have already started in Florida, with California and New York deliveries scheduled to begin in April 2025.
