Lexus has introduced the latest version of its battery electric vehicle (BEV), the RZ, at an event in Brussels, Belgium. The vehicle will be released in various markets beginning in the fall of 2025. The updated model features a redesigned electric powertrain, improvements to range and charging times, and the introduction of a steer-by-wire system.

Since the introduction of the RX 400h in 2005, Lexus has continued to expand its lineup of electrified models, with electrified vehicles accounting for 52% of its total sales in 2024. The company plans to increase the availability of battery electric vehicles, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids to meet regulatory requirements and customer demand. Lexus states that advancements in electrification will contribute to improved vehicle performance and a transition toward a carbon-neutral society.

The new RZ includes a redesigned BEV system with increased motor output and an extended driving range. Charging times have been reduced through system optimizations. The vehicle introduces a next-generation steer-by-wire system, which replaces a mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels with an electronic system. Lexus states that this allows for more precise steering and improved maneuverability at low speeds. The model also incorporates an updated version of the Direct4 all-wheel-drive system, which dynamically adjusts torque distribution based on driving conditions.

A new addition to the lineup, the RZ 550e F Sport, features a higher-output motor setup with a system output of 300 kW (407 horsepower). The vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds. The estimated driving range for this model is approximately 450 km (280 miles). Other variants, such as the RZ 350e, offer a maximum estimated range of 575 km (357 miles).

The RZ also debuts Interactive Manual Drive, a software-based system that simulates manual shifting using paddle shifters. The system creates artificial gear ratios and engine-like sound effects to provide an experience similar to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.

The exterior design of the new RZ includes aerodynamic modifications such as front and rear spoilers and revised wheels. The F Sport version features additional design elements and exclusive color options, including Neutrino Gray. The interior of the RZ incorporates Lexus’ first application of laser-etched Ultrasuede door trim, which includes plant-based materials.

Lexus states that enhancements to battery design and the eAxle motor system have improved efficiency. The company claims that the all-wheel-drive model has increased range by 14%, while the front-wheel-drive variant has seen a 20% increase. Charging performance has also been improved, with charging times reduced by up to 30 minutes. The vehicle features a preconditioning function that optimizes battery temperature before charging begins to improve efficiency in cold weather.

The RZ’s suspension has been refined to improve stability and ride comfort. Lexus has also implemented additional noise-reduction measures, including improved soundproofing materials and a revised floor silencer.

The updated Lexus RZ will be released in phases across global markets, with specific availability and pricing varying by region.
