Polestar 4 SUV arrives with more cargo space, a rear window, and a camping mode

Polestar has launched the Polestar 4 SUV, a taller and more practical version of the compact executive crossover that has become the Swedish brand’s best-selling model. The new variant keeps the coupe’s front-end design and its underlying architecture, but swaps the sloping fastback roofline for a straighter roof and a more upright tailgate. The result is a vehicle with meaningfully more cargo room, more rear headroom, and utility features aimed at buyers who use their vehicles for gear, dogs, bikes, and long weekends rather than commuting alone.

Production has already started in Busan, South Korea, where Polestar also builds the Polestar 4 coupe, and Polestar says the first shipment of cars is on its way to customers. Series production began in the second quarter of 2026, with the first customer deliveries planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.

American shoppers should temper their expectations. Polestar confirmed earlier this year that it will stop selling new vehicles in the United States after the 2026 model year, which means the Polestar 4 SUV is, for now, a European and Asian product. Polestar quotes German base prices of EUR 57,900 (approximately $67,100 USD at the time of publishing) for the Rear motor version, EUR 65,900 (approximately $76,400 USD) for the Dual motor version, and EUR 76,300 (approximately $88,500 USD) for the Dual motor with Performance pack. Those figures include German VAT and exclude handover fees. The currency conversions are direct and valid at the time of publishing, and exchange rates fluctuate.

What changes at the back

The Polestar 4 coupe is best known for the thing it does not have: a rear window. Polestar deleted it in favor of a roof-mounted camera feeding a digital rear-view mirror, a decision that drew as much attention as anything else about the car. The SUV reverses that. It opens the rear vision field toward the tailgate with a real rear window, and it comes with a conventional rear-view mirror as standard. Buyers who prefer the camera setup can still order the digital rear-view mirror as an option, which is arguably the better choice when the luggage compartment is loaded to the roof, and the glass would show nothing but cargo.

The redesigned rear end is the reason the numbers change. Total storage across the front and rear compartments now measures 1,680 liters (59.3 cubic feet). The rear compartment holds 530 liters (18.7 cubic feet) measured to the seatbacks and 655 liters (23.1 cubic feet) measured to the inner roof. Folding the 60/40 split rear seatbacks opens up 1,665 liters (58.8 cubic feet) of luggage space. Full-length roof rails are included, and they raise the dynamic roof load capacity to 100 kg (220 pounds), enough for a roof box or a pair of bikes.

Second-row passengers gain 2.5 centimeters (roughly 1 inch) of headroom over the coupe thanks to the more upright rear structure. A larger panoramic glass roof is standard and stretches all the way back to the tailgate, with the Polestar logo rendered in a blocked-out treatment. The standard glass blocks 99.5% of ultraviolet light. An electrochromic glass roof, unique to the SUV variant, is optional and adds an electrically dimmable laminated layer that occupants control from the center display, choosing between fully transparent, fully tinted, or selectively shaded sections.

Outside, the color palette expands to eight exterior finishes, including two new additions: Aurora, a bright silver green, and Ozone, a bright silver purple. Both are also offered in a matte finish. The signature dual-blade headlights and illuminated Polestar logo carry over from the coupe.

Interior and technology

The cabin follows the coupe closely. It keeps the minimalist, screen-forward layout, the landscape-oriented center display, the separate driver display, and the Star Knit decor, along with ambient lighting themes inspired by the solar system. Polestar has made one practical change to the interface: the number of widget shortcuts on the main display increases from six to nine, and the list of functions that can be assigned to those shortcuts is broader than before. That is a small but welcome concession in a vehicle that routes nearly every control through a touchscreen.

A Harman Kardon Premium Sound system with 12 speakers and a 1,400-watt channel-hybrid amplifier is optional, and Polestar says it’s tuned specifically for the SUV’s cabin. Upholstery choices include standard bio-attributed MicroTech, which uses a backing made from 100% recycled PET and a surface containing 53% bio-attributed content, an optional Tailored Knit made from 89% recycled PET and 3D-knitted to reduce production waste, and Bridge of Weir Nappa leather, a chrome-free by-product of the food industry that Polestar says is fully traceable and meets strict animal welfare standards.

Powertrains, range, and chassis

The Polestar 4 SUV rides on the same SEA architecture as the coupe and offers the same two powertrains. The rear-motor version produces 200 kW (272 hp) and 343 Nm (253 lb-ft) of torque, reaches 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.3 seconds, and delivers up to 630 km (391 miles) of WLTP range. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive version produces 400 kW (544 hp) and 686 Nm (506 lb-ft), cuts the same sprint to 3.9 seconds, and is rated at up to 600 km (373 miles) on the WLTP cycle. WLTP figures typically run optimistic compared to the EPA cycle used in the United States, so real-world expectations should land meaningfully below those numbers.

Both versions come standard with a 100 kWh battery. DC fast charging peaks at 200 kW, and AC charging runs up to 22 kW in markets that support it. The chassis specification matches the recently updated coupe. Polestar says the tuning targets comfort and refinement for daily driving and long trips while preserving steering precision and handling response.

The Performance pack adds recalibrated ZF active dampers, high-performance Brembo brakes with calipers finished in Swedish gold, and a new 22-inch wheel wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires. Joakim Rydholm, Polestar’s head of driving dynamics, says the SUV “builds on the dynamic foundation of the recently sharpened Polestar 4 coupe” and delivers “the confidence, precision and driving engagement that Polestar customers expect, in all driving conditions.” Polestar distinguishes the powertrains visually inside the cabin: the Rear motor gets an all-black seatbelt and rotary control knob, the Dual motor adds a gold stripe to both, and Performance pack cars get full Swedish gold seatbelts and knob.

Vehicle-to-Load and camping mode

Vehicle-to-Load capability is coming to all Polestar 4 vehicles, not just the SUV. The bidirectional feature lets the high-voltage battery supply AC power to external devices, delivering up to 3.3 kW at 16 amps on single-phase 230-volt power through a certified adapter sold separately through Polestar’s Extras web shop. Owners set a minimum battery level in the center display, and the vehicle stops supplying power once it reaches that threshold. Polestar has been building toward broader bidirectional functionality for some time, including a bidirectional charging pilot for Polestar 3 owners in California.

The SUV also introduces a Camping mode, which turns the parked vehicle into a climate-controlled space with a single-screen input. The mode provides access to entertainment, ambient lighting, and vehicle controls from both the front and rear displays, and it works alongside Vehicle-to-Load, USB-C ports, and the 12-volt outlet. Features like this have become a meaningful differentiator for electric vehicles, since an EV can hold cabin temperature overnight without idling an engine.

Google Gemini and connectivity

Google Gemini replaces the older command-based voice control system, and it is now available across all Polestar markets. Polestar first announced that Gemini would come to its vehicles in late 2025. The assistant understands context, supports multi-turn conversation, and handles more complex requests in natural speech. Gemini Live extends that to hands-free, non-vehicle-specific tasks, including trip planning, brainstorming, and real-time translation.

Sustainability and what comes next

Polestar says the Polestar 4 SUV carries one of the lowest carbon footprints in its lineup, at 21.1 tonnes of CO2 equivalent cradle-to-gate for the Dual motor and 20.2 tonnes for the Rear motor. The company attributes the result to 100% renewable electricity in battery cell production, aluminum sourced from smelters running on renewable electricity for 34% of total aluminum content, and 23% recycled aluminum. That approach is consistent with the supplier-level work Polestar documented in its 2025 sustainability report, which showed a 31% drop in greenhouse gas emissions per car since 2020.

Michael Lohscheller, Polestar’s chief executive, framed the launch as an expansion of the company’s most important nameplate. “Polestar 4 SUV broadens the appeal of our most successful model and extends our product offering in one of the industry’s most important segments,” he said. “With more space, more utility and more opportunities for adventure, it stays true to the design, technology and driving experience that define Polestar.”

The strategic logic is straightforward. The compact executive SUV segment is one of the largest and most profitable in Europe, and Polestar is planning four new electric vehicles by 2028 as it works to build a broader lineup. Adding a body style to an existing platform is a far cheaper way to reach new buyers than developing an entirely new model, and the coupe’s compromises, particularly the missing rear window and the tapered cargo area, gave Polestar an obvious set of problems to solve. For buyers outside the United States, the Polestar 4 SUV looks like the more sensible option.
