Rivian has introduced the second generation of its R1S SUV and R1T pickup, featuring substantial hardware and performance upgrades along with a redesigned software experience. The new models retain Rivian’s distinctive exterior design but incorporate a new zonal electrical architecture and updated compute and autonomy platforms.

The R1 platform now includes Rivian-designed Tri-Motor and Quad-Motor configurations. The Quad-Motor R1T, for example, generates 1,025 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in under 2.5 seconds. Battery options include the new Large and Max packs, which offer up to 420 miles of range, and a Standard pack with lithium iron phosphate providing up to 270 miles. Enhancements such as a redesigned heat pump-based thermal system and new 22-inch aero wheels improve efficiency and range. The updated suspension and air springs enhance the ride quality on-road while preserving off-road capability.

The vehicles feature a new electrical architecture that reduces the number of ECUs and wiring, which boosts efficiency. The Rivian Autonomy Platform, equipped with multiple cameras, radars, and AI technology, supports advanced safety features and capabilities. The new headlights include Adaptive Drive Beam technology, contributing to improved safety.

Additional features include the integration of car keys into Apple Wallet, a Rivian-developed sound system with Dolby Atmos, and the Connect+ subscription service, which supports streaming video and provides access to a variety of apps. The interior is designed with a Dynamic Glass Roof, customizable lighting, and a redesigned user interface. New premium trims, exterior paint, and trim options are also available.

Rivian has achieved a 15% reduction in the carbon footprint of these vehicles compared to the previous generation, thanks to manufacturing efficiencies and improvements in the materials supply chain. The starting price for the second-generation R1S is $75,900, and for the R1T, it is $69,900. Production is based in Normal, Illinois, with deliveries starting immediately.
