Tesla, Inc. has issued a recall for certain 2024 Cybertruck vehicles due to a defect in the drive inverter. The recall affects an estimated 2,431 vehicles, with Tesla identifying that approximately 1% of the vehicles may be impacted. The recall involves vehicles manufactured between November 6, 2023, and July 30, 2024, which contain a specific metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) in the drive inverter.
The defect is associated with a failure in the drive inverter, which may result in a sudden loss of propulsion. In the event of this failure, the vehicle would be unable to generate torque from the accelerator pedal, leading to a complete loss of propulsion and an increased risk of collision. There is no prior warning of this failure, but when it occurs, drivers are provided with a visual alert on the user interface, instructing them to safely pull over.
Tesla began investigating the issue on August 5, 2024, following a customer complaint. An internal investigation and analysis of field data from August through October 2024 revealed a higher-than-expected failure rate in the affected drive inverters. On October 30, 2024, Tesla opted to initiate the recall after confirming the issue. Tesla has recorded five warranty claims that may be linked to this defect but has reported no related collisions, injuries, or fatalities.
As a remedy, Tesla will replace the faulty drive inverters with units containing properly functioning MOSFET components, beginning December 9, 2024, at no cost to customers. Since the affected vehicles are still under warranty, Tesla will not offer pre-notice reimbursement. The updated drive inverter design has already been incorporated into Cybertruck production as of July 30, 2024.
Tesla’s service centers and dealerships were notified of the recall on November 7, 2024. Vehicle owners will be informed via mail starting January 4, 2025.
