Tesla has introduced an updated version of its Model Y crossover, codenamed “Juniper,” in the Chinese market. This marks the first significant refresh of the vehicle since its initial launch in 2019. The updated design and features aim to maintain Tesla’s competitive position in the rapidly growing electric vehicle market.

The exterior of the refreshed Model Y has undergone changes, including a redesigned front end featuring a continuous light bar and new headlights. The rear of the vehicle has also been updated with a similar full-width light bar that connects the taillights. These changes align the Model Y with Tesla’s evolving design language.

Inside, the Model Y Juniper features several updates. The cabin now includes ventilated front seats and an 8-inch rear touchscreen, providing access to entertainment options and climate controls for passengers. Ambient lighting has been added, and acoustic improvements have been made to reduce cabin noise. Tesla has reintroduced physical turn signal stalks in response to prior feedback on the user experience.

The Model Y Juniper is available in two configurations. The rear-wheel drive variant includes a single electric motor producing 295 horsepower. It can accelerate from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 5.3 seconds. This variant features a 62.5 kWh battery that delivers a range of 368 miles under China’s CLTC testing standards. The all-wheel drive long-range version includes a dual-motor setup, with a 184 horsepower motor on the front axle and a 260 horsepower motor on the rear. It achieves 0 to 62 miles per hour in 4.3 seconds and is equipped with a 78.4 kWh battery, offering a range of 446 miles on the same testing standard.

In China, pricing for the updated Model Y starts at 263,500 yuan for the rear-wheel drive model and 303,500 yuan for the all-wheel drive long-range model. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in March 2025. Tesla has not announced when or if this updated Model Y will be made available in other markets, such as the United States or Europe.

This release comes as Tesla faces increasing competition in China from domestic electric vehicle manufacturers, including BYD. The refreshed Model Y represents Tesla’s effort to remain competitive in a market that is critical to its global sales.
