Volkswagen Group of America Inc.’s autonomous mobility subsidiary, Volkswagen ADMT, LLC, and Uber Technologies, Inc. have announced a strategic partnership to deploy fully autonomous, all-electric ID. Buzz AD vehicles across multiple markets in the United States over the next decade. The rollout will begin in Los Angeles.
Initial testing of the ID. Buzz AD is scheduled to start later in 2025. The first commercial deployment is expected to occur in Los Angeles in 2026. During early phases, vehicles will include human operators to monitor and assist operations, contributing to ongoing development and safety efforts. All phases of the project will require and be subject to necessary regulatory approvals.
MOIA, another subsidiary of Volkswagen AG focused on autonomous mobility, will provide the technology and deployment platform. This includes both the hardware—the ID. Buzz AD—and the software system used to integrate with Uber’s ride-hailing platform.
The initiative represents a step toward wider deployment of autonomous vehicle technology in urban settings, with Volkswagen and Uber working jointly on integrating autonomous electric vehicles into regular transportation services.
