Volvo EX60 debuts with up to 400 miles of estimated range

Volvo Cars has formally unveiled the EX60, a new all-electric mid-size SUV positioned as a core model in the company’s expanding battery-electric lineup. Announced on January 21, 2026, the EX60 represents Volvo’s first entry into what it describes as the largest global electric vehicle segment by volume, targeting family-oriented buyers seeking a five-seat SUV with long driving range, fast charging capability, and a broad spread of configurations.

The EX60 is built on Volvo’s new SPA3 electric vehicle architecture, a platform designed to underpin a wide range of future electric models. SPA3 introduces several manufacturing and engineering changes for the company, including large-scale aluminum “mega casting,” cell-to-body battery integration, and a centralized computing system known as HuginCore. According to Volvo, these elements are intended to improve energy efficiency, reduce vehicle weight, and lower manufacturing complexity compared with earlier electric platforms.

In terms of size and packaging, the EX60 slots into the mid-size SUV category. It measures approximately 189.1 inches in length, with a wheelbase of 116.9 inches, placing it close to vehicles such as the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E in overall footprint. The vehicle’s width is listed at 74.8 inches, excluding mirrors, while the overall height is 64.5 inches at curb weight. Volvo lists a drag coefficient of 0.26, reflecting an emphasis on aerodynamic efficiency to support a longer driving range.

Volvo plans to offer the EX60 with three primary electric powertrain configurations, all based on an 800-volt electrical architecture. The rear-wheel-drive P6 Electric variant uses a single rear-mounted motor producing up to 369 horsepower. This version is rated for an estimated EPA driving range of up to 310 miles on 20-inch wheels, with slightly lower figures on larger wheel sizes. The dual-motor P10 AWD Electric increases system output to approximately 503 horsepower and is estimated to deliver up to 320 miles of EPA range depending on wheel configuration. At the top of the lineup, the P12 AWD Electric produces roughly 671 horsepower, with Volvo projecting an EPA range of up to 400 miles in its most efficient configuration.

Acceleration and performance vary by version, though Volvo has electronically limited top speed across the range to approximately 112 mph. The P12 AWD is listed with a 0–60 mph-equivalent time of under four seconds, while the P10 AWD reaches the same benchmark in the mid-four-second range. The rear-wheel-drive P6 version is slower, with acceleration closer to six seconds. Volvo has not positioned the EX60 as a performance-focused model; instead, it emphasizes efficiency, stability, and predictable power delivery across variants.

Battery sizes differ by drivetrain. The P6 Electric uses a battery with a total capacity of 83 kWh, with 80 kWh usable. The P10 AWD is fitted with a 95 kWh pack, while the P12 AWD receives the largest battery at 117 kWh total capacity, with 112 kWh usable. All versions are covered by a 10-year battery warranty, though market-specific terms may apply. Volvo has stated that the EX60 achieves the lowest lifecycle carbon footprint of any fully electric Volvo vehicle to date, matching that of the smaller EX30, due in part to platform efficiencies and updated manufacturing processes.

Charging capability is a central part of the EX60 program. The vehicle supports DC fast charging at rates of up to 400 kW under ideal conditions, with Volvo stating that the P12 AWD can add up to 173 miles of driving range in roughly 10 minutes when connected to a 400 kW fast charger. These figures are based on internal testing and assume a preconditioned battery and favorable temperature conditions. Actual charging times are expected to vary depending on battery state, charger output, and environmental factors.

In the United States, the EX60 will be the first Volvo to feature a native North American Charging Standard port. This allows direct access to Tesla’s Supercharger network without the need for an adapter, expanding the available DC fast-charging infrastructure to more than 25,000 locations nationwide at launch. AC charging is supported via both single-phase and three-phase connections, with charging times varying based on available amperage and voltage.

The EX60 also introduces bidirectional charging capability, allowing the vehicle to discharge power back to a home or compatible electrical system when paired with Volvo-approved hardware. Maximum discharge power and feature availability depend on local regulations and infrastructure, and Volvo notes that compatible bidirectional charging equipment is sold separately. While Volvo has confirmed the hardware capability, it has not outlined specific regional rollout plans or consumer use cases beyond general home energy support.

Inside, the EX60 is designed around a flat-floor architecture enabled by its dedicated EV platform. Rear-seat legroom measures approximately 37.4 inches, while front legroom is listed at 41.7 inches. Cargo capacity reaches up to 22.4 cubic feet with the second row in place and expands to 58.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. A front trunk provides additional storage, offering up to 3.0 cubic feet depending on configuration.

Material choices and interior layout follow Volvo’s established Scandinavian design approach, prioritizing simple surfaces, muted colors, and functional storage solutions. While Volvo emphasizes the use of natural and high-end materials, detailed trim compositions and market-specific options have not been fully outlined. A panoramic glass roof is available, and headroom measurements indicate just over 41 inches in the front and approximately 40.6 inches in the rear when equipped.

The infotainment and software experience is centered on Volvo’s HuginCore computing system, which consolidates vehicle control, driver assistance, and infotainment functions. The EX60 runs Android Automotive OS and is the first Volvo model to launch with Google’s Gemini AI assistant integrated directly into the vehicle. Gemini enables conversational voice interaction without fixed command structures, expanding on Volvo’s long-standing collaboration with Google.

Volvo states that system responsiveness has been improved compared with previous models, with faster screen response times, quicker map loading, and more accurate voice recognition. Apple Music is pre-installed and supports Dolby Atmos playback when paired with the available 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system, which includes headrest-mounted speakers in the front and rear outboard seats. An Apple Music subscription and compatible hardware are required for full functionality.

Safety remains a defining focus for the EX60. The vehicle incorporates Volvo’s latest safety cage design, reinforced with boron steel, and a broad array of sensors to monitor its surroundings. Enabled by the HuginCore system, the EX60 continuously processes data from cameras, radar, and other sensors to support driver assistance and collision avoidance features. Volvo positions the EX60 as meeting or exceeding its internal safety standards, which are designed to go beyond minimum regulatory requirements.

The EX60 also features Volvo’s multi-adaptive safety belt system, which adjusts restraint behavior based on occupant size, seating position, and crash characteristics. Over-the-air software updates are standard, allowing Volvo to introduce refinements and new features throughout the vehicle’s lifecycle without requiring dealer visits.

Production of the EX60 is scheduled to begin in spring 2026 at Volvo’s manufacturing facility in Sweden. European market orders are already open, with customer deliveries of the P6 and P10 variants expected to begin in summer 2026. The higher-output P12 AWD variant is scheduled to follow shortly afterward. Volvo has confirmed that the EX60 will reach the U.S. market in late spring, though final EPA range figures and pricing have not yet been released.

Volvo notes that specifications, features, and availability may vary by market and are subject to change prior to final production. Range and charging estimates remain preliminary until official EPA certification is completed, and real-world results will depend on driving conditions, vehicle configuration, and environmental factors.
