Volvo has introduced the ES90, a fully electric vehicle that combines elements of a sedan, fastback, and SUV. The model is designed to provide a mix of comfort, space, and practicality. It features 800V technology for improved charging speed and range, making it the first Volvo vehicle with this capability. The ES90 is part of Volvo’s lineup of electric vehicles, joining models such as the EX90, EM90, EX40, EC40, and EX30. Orders are open in selected markets.
The ES90 has a slightly raised ride height and a streamlined design intended to enhance aerodynamics and efficiency. It includes Volvo’s signature Thor’s Hammer headlight design, C-shaped LED rear lamps, and lighting elements integrated into the rear window. Customers can choose from seven exterior colors and wheels ranging from 20 to 22 inches. The vehicle offers 424 liters of trunk space, which expands to 733 liters when the rear seats are folded down. A 22-liter front trunk is available for additional storage.
The interior of the ES90 is designed with a focus on comfort and functionality. The vehicle has a 3.1-meter wheelbase, providing increased legroom for rear passengers. It features ambient lighting options, multiple upholstery choices, and a panoramic roof with UV protection and optional electrochromic glass for adjustable transparency. A four-zone climate system with an advanced air purifier is included, capable of filtering 95 percent of PM2.5 particles and allergens.
Sound insulation has been improved to lower noise levels inside the cabin. The top-tier audio system is provided by Bowers & Wilkins and includes 25 speakers, headrest and ceiling speakers, and Dolby Atmos spatial audio. The system also features a mode designed to replicate the acoustics of Abbey Road Studios.
The infotainment system is powered by the Snapdragon Cockpit Platform from Qualcomm and features Google integration, including Google Maps and Google Assistant. The ES90 has a 9-inch driver display and a 14.5-inch center screen for navigation, climate controls, and entertainment. A 360-degree camera system provides assistance in parking and maneuvering.
Built on Volvo’s SPA2 architecture, the ES90 uses the Superset tech stack, which enables over-the-air updates for software improvements. It is equipped with a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin core computing system, making it the most advanced Volvo in terms of computing power. This system enables safety and performance enhancements through AI and software.
The ES90 utilizes 800V battery technology, allowing for a range of up to 700 kilometers under the WLTP cycle. It can add 300 kilometers of range in approximately 10 minutes when charged at a 350 kW fast-charging station. The vehicle’s drag coefficient is rated at 0.25, which is the lowest for any Volvo model.
Volvo has included its latest safety systems in the ES90. The vehicle has a high-strength safety cage, optimized crumple zones, and an array of sensors, including five radars, seven cameras, twelve ultrasonic sensors, and a lidar system from Luminar Technologies. These features support advanced driver-assistance functions. The ES90 also includes a driver monitoring system that can detect when a driver is inattentive. Additional safety features include a door opening alert for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as full-cabin occupant sensing to detect movement inside the vehicle.
The ES90 is currently available for order in several European markets, including Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, and Sweden. Additional markets will be added later in 2025 and 2026.
