Volvo Cars has announced the introduction of the new XC70, a mid-size SUV that serves as the company’s first extended-range plug-in hybrid. The vehicle offers an estimated all-electric range of up to 200 kilometers under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), currently the highest range for any Volvo plug-in hybrid model.

The XC70 is built on Volvo’s new Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA), which supports extended-range plug-in hybrid configurations. This model is initially targeted at the Chinese market and will be available for order there later in 2025. The company has stated that it may consider additional markets in the future.
According to Volvo Cars president and chief executive Håkan Samuelsson, the XC70 is intended to act as a transitional product for consumers who are not yet ready to adopt fully electric vehicles. The company views the XC70 as part of a regional strategy to align products with local market demands.

The XC70 combines an extended-range electric system with a combustion engine. It includes fast-charging capabilities and is designed to accommodate most daily travel without tailpipe emissions. The combustion engine provides additional range for longer journeys. Volvo positions the XC70 as a vehicle offering both passenger space and flexible use cases.
Design elements of the XC70 draw on Volvo’s established Scandinavian aesthetic. The exterior includes a closed front grille inspired by Volvo’s electric vehicle lineup, with an active grille shutter that adjusts automatically for aerodynamic efficiency, cabin climate, and engine cooling. The vehicle also features Matrix LED headlights that adapt to driving conditions, and C-shaped taillights that are integrated into the rear glass structure.

The XC70 name was previously used by Volvo for a model derived from the V70 estate. The new version carries this name forward in an SUV format and is slightly larger than the Volvo XC60.
Further details about the XC70 are expected to be released in the coming months.
