Volvo Cars will offer Swedish customers one year of free home charging for new fully electric vehicles starting in February 2026. The program is being launched in partnership with Swedish energy company Vattenfall and is intended to make the transition to electric vehicles more accessible for private buyers. The offer applies to customers who either purchase or lease a new Volvo electric vehicle.

The free charging offer covers up to 5,150 kilowatt-hours of fossil-free electricity, which Volvo estimates is equivalent to approximately 25,000 kilometers (15,534 miles) of driving based on the WLTP cycle of the Volvo EX90. To qualify, customers must have an active electricity contract with Vattenfall and use the same electricity meter for charging at home, typically in a detached or semi-detached house. They must also use the smart charging feature available in the Volvo Cars app. The app enables optimized charging during times of lower cost and lower carbon emissions, tracks energy consumption, and allows users to monitor the vehicle’s charging status. The electricity cost for charging will be calculated and deducted from the customer’s monthly Vattenfall bill.

Volvo intends to use the results from the Swedish launch to inform a broader rollout of the program in other markets, working with additional energy partners. The company plans to expand the offer to include vehicle-to-everything (V2X) capabilities once they are available in 2026. With V2X functionality, vehicles such as the EX90 will be able to supply power back to homes or the grid, adding further flexibility for owners.

The collaboration between Volvo Cars and Vattenfall builds on a longstanding partnership in sustainable mobility. Previous joint efforts include the launch of the Volvo V60 diesel plug-in hybrid in 2012 and Vattenfall’s provision of fossil-free energy to Volvo’s Torslanda production facility in Sweden. The two companies share the goal of accelerating electrification and making electric driving more accessible while lowering the entry barrier for new customers.
