For the model year 2026, the Nissan Leaf enters its third generation. It’s built atop the Nissan Ariya platform, and is the first true modern EV since the introduction of the car. It also has a native NACS port for fast charging, meaning you might be considering a CCS adapter.
What is a CCS adapter?
A CCS adapter allows you to pull up to a DC fast charging station and utilize a CCS cord on your NACS-equipped Leaf. Your Leaf technically charges the same way as it would without it, but this adapter (or converter, or dongle, or whatever you want to call it) allows you to use more charging stations, making it easier to recharge on the go.
Do I need a CCS adapter?
Technically speaking, you do not. By default, your Leaf will work at any Tesla Supercharging location, and Ionna charging stations have dedicated NACS chargers as well. Other charging providers are updating their networks to have NACS connectors, so they’ll become even more widespread. But they won’t be at every charging station, so a CCS adapter provides you with the most compatibility for the most convenience.
Should I buy Nissan’s CCS adapter?
If you decide you want an adapter, and our recommendation is yes, you should have one, you should get one from Nissan when you get your Leaf. Normally, we’d suggest shopping around to see if you can find an adapter for a lower price (since there isn’t much to them), but presently Nissan charges $170 for one.
While there aren’t many CCS to NACS port adapters out there (there are tons that go the other way), many adapters sell in the $200 range. We believe that the price Nissan is charging is competitive, and not an overpriced add-on to boost profitability. We also wouldn’t be surprised if most Leafs come with one already in the car as a selected option. If we were a Nissan dealership, that’s how we’d order our inventory from the mothership.
(Editor’s note: You may notice that there are Tesla-focused CCS to NACS adapters in the $100 to $150 range. None of them state that they can work on non-Teslas with a NACS plug, so we aren’t comfortable recommending them until we have had a chance to independently verify compatibility, or the manufacturer certifies compatibility.)
We’ll update this page if the situation changes, but our recommendation is to have the CCS adapter, because many stations only have that as an option, and you’ll want the peace of mind of having the broadest compatibility during this transition from CCS to NACS for new EVs in the United States and Canada.
