The 2024 Dodge Hornet R/T represents the first all-new model from Dodge in a decade and is available as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). This compact crossover aims to compete with other vehicles in its segment, including the Honda HR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Mazda CX-5.
The Hornet R/T is equipped with a 1.3-liter turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor, providing a total of 288 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. The vehicle features an all-wheel drive system with a six-speed automatic transmission. It offers up to 30 miles of all-electric range and includes an independent rear suspension for enhanced ride quality and handling. Additionally, it comes with adjustable dampers and Michelin Pilot Sport all-season tires, which are part of an upgraded Track package.
The Hornet R/T is built on the same platform as the Alfa Romeo Tonale and is produced at the same facility in Italy. It includes standard features such as a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and the Uconnect 5 infotainment system, which supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The system is compact, which prevents it from overwhelming the dashboard, and retains traditional climate control buttons.
Cargo space in the rear is adequate, though the area beneath the floor is occupied by the battery pack. However, there is sufficient space to store the load cover. A notable feature of the Hornet R/T is the PowerShot function, activated by steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. When in sport mode, pulling both paddles simultaneously and pressing the accelerator provides an additional 30 horsepower for 15 seconds, with a cooldown period before it can be used again. Dodge claims this feature reduces the 0-60 mph time by 1.5 seconds.
In urban driving, the Hornet R/T performs comfortably with good power delivery and smooth transitions between electric and hybrid modes. The driving experience is satisfactory, though the automatic transmission’s manual mode shifts are not as prompt as desired. The vehicle handles well on twisty roads, with good grip and effective dampers. Despite its overall performance, the Hornet R/T lacks the excitement seen in some competitors, such as the Hyundai Kona N. Upcoming upgrades from Direct Connection may enhance its driving experience.
